This won't bear fruit unless |
To make the parenting plan work out, |
That's a foul and I'm calling a penalty. |
You've both been through a lot and now |
At the end of the day, |
Everything else had been tried so finally |
They haggled over child support. |
Examples to Practice Distinction Between Source and Target Domains |

they put all their cards on the table. |
A brother and sister... arguing about mother...A grown brother and sister are negotiating what to do about the living situation for their aging mother. Their mother had recently had some bad experiences living alone. The daughter argues that assisted living was the answer because their mother would be much less likely to have an accident and hurt herself. The son maintains that assisted living would result in their mother becoming dependent, just what she had always said she did not want to have happen.

Sister says it will reduce chance...A grown brother and sister are negotiating what to do about the living situation for their aging mother. Mediator tells about when he was young...Family members are negotiating about financial matters, each has put forth proposals, everyone seems to understand the issues, but no agreements have been made. The mediator decides to tell a story about how his grandfather, who had lived on a farm, would sometimes not be able to get the mule to pull the cart. What he did then was to tie the mule to a post and go do other chores for a few hours. When he returned the mule was good and hungry and would respond to the usual stimuli and would start to pull the cart.

I'm glad you left your guns at the door. |
MoreExamples - note the Source and Target of each:Mediation helps disputants reach a mutual decision. There were underlying tensions that escalated into polarized conflict. He made the decision, but will he follow through? Just when I was getting to the point, he cut me off. I gave (handed) her everything she wanted. He has a certain set of beliefs. They rediscovered their passion for ice cream.

Example of Target and Source |
-Humans push not only with their hands, but with their bodies propelled by their legs and feet. There is a whole "body language" of pushing that includes leaning the body, making contact with hands or other surfaces and applying force. Machines also push. Inanimate, normally stationary objects push once set in motion. All of these variations evoke somewhat different source domains.
|
Some Mediators push for joint custody.(A quotation from the expert literature on mediation.)We know we are talking about what mediators may (or may not) do in mediation, and we know that they use words. So we know that "push" is used figuratively and triggers allusion to another domain of activity.

Source DomainThe logic, meaning and understanding of Source Domain is made available by introducing a Metaphor. The Metaphor is "apt" to the degree that it has corresponding elements and relationships. Once this Source Domain is available, transfer occurs back to the Target Domain.
|
Target Domain`The Target Domain is what is being focused on now. What is of concern is within this domain - the situation you face now.
