AffectAs motivation, "Affect" has to do with feelings such as like and dislike, and connections and affiliation with others. In making evaluative judgments or assessments, "Affect" asks questions about values from the point of view of oneself, the other, or the context (e.g., self: do I like this? other: am I liked? context: am I likable?)
Notes: The Satir category this most resembles is "placate"; the sensory modality from NLP is Kinesthetic.

ImpactAs motivation, "Impact" represents the position or social status desired (perhaps within a hierarchy) through making the right impression, being meaningful or important in the desired way, or having the right influence.
In making evaluative judgments or assessments, "Impact" answers questions such as: Is this the right thing? Is it as it should be?

Motivation and Evaluation TriangleMcWhirter proposes this synthesis of motivation and evaluation. At the same time this three-way distinction identifies terms of functional, evaluative judgments or assessments which monitor Effect, Affect and Impact. All three are usually involved simultaneously as a person moves within the triangle away or towards each apex. The order in which each is approached can be important also. All three are needed: These three criteria are independent in the sense that, for example, something could be very effective, but have very little influence and not be liked. In general, however, a balance is needed at least to some degree; extremes are dangerous (e.g., being too effective could sacrifice the personal dimension of affiliation)
|
Exercises1. Take an attainment which seems to have been evaluated highly on only one of the three criteria. Trace to see if or how the other criteria may have figured in. What did you have to think, feel and do to get full consider each of the criteria?

EffectAs motivation, "Effect" has to do with desires to be effective, successful, and to achieve in doing certain things.
In making evaluative judgments or assessments, "Effect" asks about the following: Notes: This corresponds to the Satir category "blame", and visual or auditory sensory modalities in NLP.

Example: High positive evaluation in all three domains.
